Drive can provide encrypted and secure access to your files. An integrated suit of secure, cloud-native collaboration and productivity apps powered by Google AI. The extension can be used for opening Office files stored on the computer using Chrome, as well as for opening Office files encountered on the web (in the form of email attachments, web search results, etc.) without having to download them. In order to view and edit Docs, Sheets, or Slides documents offline, users need to be using the Google Chrome web browser. The three apps are available as web applications, as Chrome apps that work offline, and as mobile apps for Android and iOS. Surprisingly iOS Drive works better than Androids version

In July 2021, Google Drive for Desktop, a new app for Windows and Mac, was released replacing “Backup and Sync” and “Drive File Stream”. Its main function is for the user to be able to set certain folders to constantly sync onto their Google Account’s Drive. It was made mainly to replace the Google Drive desktop app, which was discontinued.

Google announced shutting down Google Currents on July 5, 2023, for business and education. As part of Google Workspace, Google Currents comes with additional features designed for business use, including enhanced privacy controls and restricted communities. Google Meet is a standards-based Video Conferencing application, using proprietary protocols for video, audio and data transcoding. Although Google Hangouts remained part of Google Workspace, Google shut down Google Hangouts on November 1, 2022, and has since migrated all its users to Google Chat. It is one of two apps that constitute the replacement for Google Hangouts, the other being Google Meet.
Enterprise-level customers receive S/MIME encryption, noise cancellation in Meet, and as much storage as they need. The Starter plan includes email addresses with custom domains (@yourcompany.com), video and voice calls, calendars, 30GB storage, collaborative documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and sites, controls for security and privacy, and 24/7 phone and email support. All Workspace Business and Enterprise plans include access to Gemini for Workspace without the need to purchase an additional add-on. This will not affect access to other Google Services, including YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Play, nor paid content, including YouTube and Play Store purchases. If a user does not manually upgrade to a paid tier and if no payment information is entered in the account admin page, the account will be suspended starting July 1, 2022. On January 19, 2022, Google announced any “G Suite legacy free edition” accounts must be upgraded to a paid tier by May 1, 2022, or the account will be automatically upgraded.

For Workspace users, ownership transfers are only allowed within the same domain, unless explicitly permitted by admin settings. Content owners can share files or folders by entering email addresses or generating a shareable link. By default, the user who uploads or creates a file or folder in Google Drive becomes its owner. Google also provides dedicated desktop and mobile device apps for Drive that can be downloaded and installed locally.
Further enhancements came, on June 25, 2007, when Google added a number of features to Google Apps, including mail migration from external IMAP servers, shared address books, a visual overhaul of Google Docs and Google Sheets, and increased Gmail attachment size. Google announced an edition for schools, then known as Google Apps for Education, on October 10, 2006. Depending on edition Google Workspace may also include the digital interactive whiteboard Jamboard and an option to purchase add-ons such as the telephony service Voice.
The three access levels offered are “can edit”, “can comment” and “can view”. Files and folders can also be made “public on the web”, which means that they can be indexed by search engines and thus can be found and accessed by anyone. This generates a secret URL for the file, which may be shared via email or private messages. Google Drive incorporates a system of file sharing in which the creator of a file or folder is, by default, its owner.

Google Chat

On March 10, 2014, Google launched the Google Apps Referral Program, which offers participating individuals a $15 referral bonus for each new Google Apps user they refer. Later that year, Google announced that the free version of Google Apps would no longer be available to new customers. On March 28, 2012, Google launched Google Vault, an optional electronic discovery and archiving service for Google Apps for Business customers. A flexible billing plan was also introduced, giving customers the option of paying $5 per user per month with no contractual commitment. On June 9, 2009, Google launched Google Apps Sync for Outlook, a plugin that allows customers to synchronize their email, calendar, and contacts data between Outlook and Google Apps. On October 3, 2007, a month after acquiring Postini, Google announced that the startup’s email security and compliance options had been added to Google Apps Premier Edition.

Google Drive for business: Enterprise use

On August 28, 2006, Google launched Google Apps for Your Domain, a set of apps for organizations. It consists of Gmail, Contacts, Calendar, Meet and Chat for communication; Drive for storage; and the Google Docs Editors suite for content creation. As enterprise reliance on Google Drive grows, IT administrators will need to implement robust data storage management strategies to ensure compliance and protect against security threats. Google automatically renews Drive subscriptions at the end of each billing cycle and gives a seven-day betico grace period for users to update their payment information if the auto-renewal fails. The service also supports integration with third-party applications and browser extensions that can be acquired through the Chrome Web Store, Apple’s App Store or Google Play. Mobile users can also make queries in natural language using their device’s voice input.
